PeterShepherd,ProfessorofUniversityofAuckland,Auckland,NewZealand.PeterShepherdmovedbacktoNewZealandfromUniversityCollegeLondoninSept2004andmyresearchcontinuestobeinthebroadareaofsignaltransductionwithaparticularfocusonPI3-kinaseandWntsignalingpathways.Thediseaseshefocusonaretype-2diabetes,cancerandschizophreniaasdefectsinsignaltransductionareafeatureofallthesediseases.TranslationalresearchisalsoanimportantfocusandPathwayTherapeuticsandSymansisaretwocompaniesthathavespunoutfromthelab.ThelabhasbeendirectlyinvolvedinseveraldrugdiscoveryprogrammesincollaborationwiththeAucklandCancerSocietyResearchCentre(ACSRC).TheseresultedinthedevlopmentofthePI3-kinaseinhibitorPWT33597anditsadvancementtophase-1clnicaltrialasananticanceragent.SeveralPI3-kinasedrugdiscoveryprojectsareongoingaimedatdevelopingsecondgenerationinhibitors,includingoneincollaborationwiththeChineseNationalCentreforDrugScreening.Wearealsoinvolvedindrugdevelopmentprogrammesontargetsintheimmunotherapyspace.
